How to submit tax return online: A step-by-step guide

I would like to thanks National Board of Revenue (NBR) because of submitting tax returns online in Bangladesh has become easier than ever.

Why file tax returns online?

This article explains the step-by-step process for filing your income tax return online, ensuring a easy and hassle-free experience for taxpayers

Filing tax returns online eliminates the need for direct interactions between tax officials and taxpayers, reducing chances of corruption.

With features like online filing, automated receipts, e-payment, and downloadable acknowledgement certificate, tax certificates and challan is now the go-to option for many.

Eligibility for filing tax returns

- Individuals are required to file taxes who are with an annual income exceeding Tk3,50,000.00

- Women and citizens aged 65 or above enjoy a tax-free income threshold of Tk4,00,000, while freedom fighters have a threshold of Tk5,00,000.

- Taxpayers with a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) must submit returns annually, even if income is below the taxable limit (via zero returns).

Mandatory online returns

Online tax filing is now mandatory for:

- Government employees in specific tax zones (e.g., Dhaka, Gazipur, Narayanganj).

- Employees of scheduled banks, telecom operators, and multinational companies.

Step 1: Register for E-Return

Visit NBR’s portal (http://www.etaxnbr.gov.bd) and follow these steps:

TIN and Biometric-Verified Mobile Number:

Ensure your mobile number is registered against your NID. Check by dialing `16001`

Sign Up:

- Enter your TIN in the first box.

- Provide your NID-verified mobile number (omit the first ‘0’).

- Enter the captcha code and click Verify.

OTP Verification:

Use the One-Time Password (OTP) sent to your phone to complete verification.

Set a Password:

Create a secure password to log into the e-return system.

Step 2: Start filing

After logging in, navigate to the Dashboard and select Submission. Choose one of two categories:

Regular E-Return: For taxpayers with multiple income sources.

Single-Page Return: Available if you meet conditions such as having income below Tk5,00,000 and being a non-government employee.

Step 3: Gather required documents

Before proceeding, have the following ready:

- Salary statements, rent receipts, and lease agreements.

- Tax payment receipts, bank account statements, and investment details.

- NID, TIN, and previous tax return copies (if applicable).

No physical documents need to be uploaded; only the information is required.

Step 4: Fill in Tax Information

Tax Assessment Information

Provide the assessment year, income source, and residency status. If your income is non-taxable, specify the amount and exempt category.

Heads of Income

Include all sources of income:

- Salary

- Property rental

- Agricultural income

- Business income

- Other sources

Use the Save and Continue option to store progress.

Investment and deductions

Enter details of tax-deductible investments such as:

- Life insurance premiums

- Deposit Pension Schemes (DPS)

- Provident funds

-Zakat funds

Expenses

Break down your expenses, including housing, transportation, education, and other personal expenses.

Advance tax payments

Provide details of any source tax or advance tax already paid. The system will automatically calculate your remaining payable tax or confirm zero tax due.

Step 5: Review and submit

- Verify all information before final submission.

- Click Yes to confirm and submit.

Step 6: Download acknowledgment receipt

Upon successful submission, you will receive a confirmation message along with a reference ID. Download this receipt for your records. You can also print it if needed.

Additional features

- Downloadable copies of submitted returns, acknowledgment slips, challan and TIN certificates.

- Tax payments through debit/credit cards, mobile banking, and internet banking.
